Protect Your Android: How to Enable Anti-Theft Features and Keep Your Phone Secure

Protecting your personal data is more critical than ever, especially with smartphones being primary targets for theft. Google recently rolled out a robust suite of Theft Protection features for Android that can automatically lock your phone if it's snatched or goes offline.

Here is a comprehensive guide to activating these features and securing your device.

How to Enable Android’s New Theft Protection

Most of these settings are found in a centralized location within your Google settings.

1. Activate AI-Powered Theft Detection

This feature uses your phone's sensors and AI to detect if someone has grabbed your device and is running, cycling, or driving away.

·       Go to Settings.

·       Tap Google > All services.

·       Select Theft protection (under "Personal & device safety").

·       Toggle on Theft Detection Lock.

2. Turn on Offline Device Lock

If a thief tries to disconnect your phone from the internet to prevent tracking, this feature will automatically lock the screen.

·       In the same Theft protection menu, toggle on Offline Device Lock.

·       Note: This usually triggers after the screen has been active and then loses connection for a specific period.

3. Enable Remote Lock

If your phone is already gone and you don’t have access to your Google password, you can lock it using just your phone number.

·       In the Theft protection menu, tap Remote Lock.

·       Toggle it On and verify your phone number.

·       How to use it: Visit android.com/lock from any device, enter your number, and complete a quick security challenge to lock the screen.

Essential Security Foundations

Beyond the new theft features, ensure these "classic" security layers are active:

Set Up 'Identity Check' (Android 15+)

Identity Check adds a mandatory biometric scan (fingerprint or face) when you are away from "Trusted Places" (like home) and someone tries to change sensitive settings like your PIN or Google Account password.

·       Navigate to Settings > Security & privacy > Device unlock > Theft protection.

·       Turn on Identity Check.

Configure Find My Device (Offline Finding)

Google’s updated "Find My Device" network now allows you to locate devices even when they are offline or powered off (on supported hardware).

·       Go to Settings > Security > Find My Device.

·       Ensure Use Find My Device is toggled on.

·       Tap Offline finding and select "With network everywhere" for the best chance of recovery.

Lock Your SIM Card

Thieves often move your SIM to another phone to intercept 2FA codes. A SIM PIN prevents this.

·       Go to Settings > Security & privacy > More security settings.

·       Tap SIM card lock and toggle on Lock SIM card.

·       Warning: Do not guess this PIN; if you forget it, you will need a PUK code from your carrier.
